Deep Fakes... For Good????

After learning about using deep fake technology to recreate moving portraits, I think it is a bad use of this technology because why recreate a moving portrait of your deceased family members or otherwise when you already have an actual portrait of them. Personally I think that a photo of them is enough for me because having a moving portrait is just kind of creepy and not the same as actually having them around moving. Many people would probably love to have these type of portraits in their home because they really miss their deceased family members to the point where they want to see them move again or for some other reason, but I wouldn’t like to have this type of portrait around my house because to me the technology takes away the meaning of the actual photo that was taken years ago or even decades. It will also make it feel unnatural. Having this type of portrait will also make me miss them more. At the same time it is pretty cool and how people came up with this type of technology. This type of technology can have a lot of pros because this can make many people happy especially if they live alone, they can always look at the portrait so that they do not feel as lonely. On the other hand this could also have many cons because if this technology is widely available to the public, who knows what people will do with this deep fake technology. There are many evil people in the world that would impersonate someone else and make them say horrible things about people or themselves. If this type of technology gets in the hands of someone who does terrible things then it will cause a huge problem because they could literally impersonate a celebrity, an influencer, or even a president and make them say false things and make them look like a horrible person.

  1. Hi Kristjan, Great post. I agree with what you said about the moving portraits. The moving portraits are kind of creepy and not the same. I do agree that a moving portrait would probably be good for others if they really miss their family member that much, but I also agree that the technology takes away the meaning of the photo. This is a really good point. If the photo was taken a long time ago, than the meaning would be gone since it's not the original photo that has all of the history inside of it. I agree with how you said that it's amazing how us humans came up with this type of technology and that since this type of technology is open to the public, evil people could use this to harm others and cause a big problem.
